With just a radius of 1 km, unostentatious Aka-jima makes up in perfection what it needs in size. With some beguiling shorelines and an amazingly calm air, it's definitely not hard to get stuck here for a couple of days. There's also some decent snorkeling and diving close-by. There are shorelines on each side of the island; then again, for typical postcard appeal; it's hard to beat the 1km stretch of white sand on the upper east drift known as Nishibama Beach.
